Teach students the mechanics of density by allowing them to make their own hydrometers. A 165 mm (61/2") constant volume glass tube is loaded with sand and placed in distilled water. Students position the scale by lining up the appropriate mark to the water level. Other liquids or solutions can then be tested in comparison to distilled water.
